They keep talking about 4 permanent bases - I believe there are 6... and the amounts of money being spent on it are just simply unbelievable. There are these supplementary appropriations every year in the $75 - $100 billion range. At least half of it is going to base building in Iraq, and is almost totally unsupervised by anybody... Of the six bases, the first one that ought to be mentioned but I think is close to taboo in the mainstream press is the new US Embassy. It cost half a billion dollars, supposed to be done by next June, June 2007. It's being built with imported foreign labour from Asia. Even though there is a continuous electricity shortage in Iraq, there is no shortage of electricity to build this thing. The lights are on around the clock.
