world debt

Note: 260% debt-to-GDP is the all time record for repayment, accomplished by England between 1815 and 1900, but required both massive cuts in spending and an industrial revolution.

Without mincing words, the world does not face a crisis of liquidity, nor a crisis of insufficient debt, but one of entirely too much debt. That's the entire predicament in three words: too much debt.

have another go, dear

What a nice precedent. Isn't it good to know that when we vote in Cameron's Bullingdon Club next May (as we shall), it isn't necessarily for real. We can have another go, until we get it right (or left).

How many 'goes' does it say we can have in the new democratic EU superstate? Or does that depend on how many goes it takes to buy the people's assent for what you were anyway going to do. In which case, why don't we abolish the voice of the people altogether. It would be much cheaper.

Oh. I forgot. We're going to have a brand new President. But we don't get to vote for him.

EU democracy

We cannot have an expansive monetary policy, not because we voted for a restrictive policy, but because the European Central Bank makes the rules, even for member states outside the euro-zone.
We cannot write to ask a government minister or our MEP to propose a particular change in European law unless there happens to be a relevant proposal before the Council of Ministers and the European Parliament, because only the unelected European Commission has the right to propose new legislation.
We cannot refuse to have genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in our country because an EU directive says that, except under extremely limited conditions, we have to have them.

they are seeking a place

The fascists destroyed our lives, so that even today we are unable to forget. Today we wander through the whole of Europe, searching for what the fascists took from us. Among us there are children who have Romani mothers and German fathers – children whose mothers were raped and came into the world that way children like J.S. and A. who wander with us as Roma and not as Germans. They also are seeking a place where they can stay and lead meaningful, dignified lives.

my permanent possessions

...never in the history of mankind, never anywhere in the realm of human relations did anything occur to compare with what was inflicted on the Jewish population of Poland... The images of what I saw in the death camp are, I am afraid, my permanent possessions. I would like nothing better than to purge my mind of these memories.

who took the message about the Polish Ghetto to the wartime Allies, and was disbelieved.

ROMA HOLOCAUST - forgetting the victims

'Roma, commonly but inaccurately called Gypsies, were the only other population besides the Jews who were targeted for extermination on racial grounds in the Final Solution.'

Ian Hancock, Genocide of the Roma in the Holocaust

How many people today are aware that the Roma as a group was as much a victim - if not more so, proportionately - of the Nazi experiment as were the Jews? And how many people today would put their hands on their hearts and say that we should remember this for ever?

The shocking tragedy for those Roma who died as well as for those who miraculously survived, is that their suffering has not just been forgotten by humanity, it has been deliberately forgotten. We have not recognised their victimhood, we have hardly even acknowledged it, and we have done almost nothing to try to compensate - if that were ever possible. Worst of all, we have done nothing to prevent them from becoming victims all over again of exactly the same hatred and blind prejudice that drove the Nazi killers.

Nuggets to try to jog our non-existent memories...
